Successful Tournament
Ridgewaye Football Club held its 4th annual football tournament last weekend. 1500 players aged 6-15, travelled to Southborough representing185 teams from Kent, Sussex and Surrey in over 500 matches, with three girls competitions reflecting the club's pre-eminent standing within this fast-growing area of the game as the only local team to offer highly competitive Kent County football for girls. The tournament proved extremely attractive, as previously, due to its innovative structure whereby the event split at halfway with the stronger teams competing for the title of Champions with the rest playing for a Shield. This meant some of the sport's lesser lights had their best opportunity to win silverware! The club was also delighted to be able to welcome Southborough mayor, Colin Bothwell, and his deputy, John Burbidge, to present some of the awards. "The Club have been delighted with the support we have received from the Town Council in staging our tournament as without this sanction and the many helpers within the Club, it would be impossible to hold such an event" said Ridgewaye Chairman, Graham Withers. He added: "We were especially thrilled that the 22 trophies were won by 16 different clubs".
